Apa perbedaan self branding/personal branding dengan pencitraan?
Menurut William Arruda, pendiri Reach Branding Club, Self branding adalah mengidentifikasi dan mengkomunikasikan secara jelas nilai-nilai khas yang dimiliki seseorang, sedangkan pencitraan adalah upaya menampilkan image atau gambaran seseorang sebagai tokoh yang serba sempurna. Kita abaikan masalah pencitraan, ya…saya kurang suka membahasnya.
Tidak semua orang mampu menjelaskan apa kelebihan yang ada pada dirinya dan jarang ditemukan pada orang lain atau apa keunikan produknya.
Apa perlunya kita memiliki self branding?
Pertama, jelas untuk kepentingan upaya meningkatkan rasa syukur kepada Dia yang telah menghidupkan kita. Ketika menyadari nilai-nilai kebaikn dan keunikan itu, tentu juga akan meningkatkan kepercayaan diri saat berhadapan dengan orang lain.
Kedua, dengan self branding, popularitas akan meningkat. Hmm, apa perlunya kita jadi orang populer? Oke, mayoritas manusia akan lebih mendengar pendapat orang yang dikenalnya daripada orang asing. Jadi, kalau ingin suara, pendapat dan pesan kita didengar dan diterima oleh orang lebih banyak, maka tingkatkanlah popularitas dengan self branding positif.
Untuk meningkatkan popularitas produk, upaya yang sering dilakukan adalah promosi, salah satunya dengan melibatkan media, bahkan, konon kabarnya, biaya promosi bisa dianggarkan jauh lebih tinggi dari biaya produksi. Tidak beda dengan upaya meningkatkan popularitas diri.
Mungkin kita termasuk orang yang enggan memasuki wilayah populer, mengingat konskuensi yang kemungkinan besar akan menyertainya. Tetapi, saat kita sudah mencanangkan diri menjadi bagian dari penyampai pesan kebaikan, konskuensi logisnya adalah berupaya meningkatkan popularitas agar pesan-pesan kebaikan yang kita sampaikan lebih banyak yang mendengar dan menerimanya. Itu sebab, kenapa setiap ada kesempatan yang diberikan untuk menunjukkan dan mengenalkan diri dan karya-karya, saya jarang menolaknya, baik wilayah kecil maupun luas.
Bagaimana peran media dalam peningkatan self branding seseorang?
Tentu sangat besar, mengingat saat ini kita dikuasai media. Dan media apa yang mengangkat, tentu mempengaruhi seberapa kemungkinan peningkatannya. Media yang diakses lebih banyak orang, tentu akan lebih besar pengaruhnya pada peningkatan popularitas seseorang. Dan bisa sebaliknya, dimana media meningkat popularitasnya karena menangangkat self branding seseorang.
Kadang kesempatan itu tidak diduga sebelumnya, walaupun sudah pernah diangankan. Saya baru saja mengalaminya.
